Networking; share your internet
connection, play games and so much more...
What is
a network?
When people hear the word 'network' it is not uncommon to think of a huge
company with computers linked around the world. This might have been true
several years ago, but not today. Home networks have been increasing in
popularity over the last year or so, mainly fuelled by the growth in broadband
Internet and people buying second computers for their homes.
A network allows you to connect 2 or more computers
together. You can share files and printers as well an Internet connection
which makes networks attractive in the home.
Microsoft® Windows® XP has made setting
up your home network simple with the introduction of the 'Home Networking
Wizard'. All you need to do is buy the hardware to link your computers
together.
What do you need?
First of all you need to decide what type of
network you require.
Wired
Most computers and notebooks are supplied with a network card already
built in all. All you need to buy are the cables and a broadband router
or network hub.
Wireless
If you don't want messy cables you can choose a wireless network. This
gives you the freedom to move your computers around and is ideal if you
have a notebook computer. The hardware required is more expensive and
a wireless network is not as fast as a traditional Ethernet network.
